We're sharing some Safety Tips courtesy of Safe City Mississauga, who manage the Neighbourhood Watch Program that Lorne Park Watercolours participates in.
Avoid Package Theft This Winter
Snowy months can mean more online shopping for convenience, but unattended packages can be easy targets for thieves. Here’s how to keep your deliveries safe:
- Use a Secure Delivery Option: Request packages be delivered to a back door, side door, or a secure location out of sight from the street.
- Opt for Pick-Up: Use parcel lockers or request packages be sent to a nearby pick-up location for added security.
- Install a Video Doorbell: A visible doorbell camera can deter thieves and provide evidence in case of theft.
- Coordinate with Neighbours: If you’re away, ask a trusted neighbour to collect packages promptly.
- Track Deliveries: Use tracking apps to monitor delivery times and bring packages inside as soon as possible.
By taking these proactive steps, you can protect your deliveries and deter porch thieves this winter.
Deter Criminal Activity with Clear Walkways and Driveways
Snow and ice can be more than just a hazard to your footing—they can also signal to criminals that a home is unoccupied. A neglected, snowy driveway or walkway can suggest that no one is home, making your property a more likely target for criminal activity.
What can you do?
- Keep walkways and driveways clear of snow and ice to give the impression that someone is actively caring for the property.
Regularly shovel or salt your driveway and pathways to avoid creating a potential target for crime. - Ensure that your home is well-lit at night, especially along walkways, to discourage criminals from approaching.
- A clear, maintained property shows that someone is present and vigilant, making it less attractive to those with bad intentions.
By staying on top of snow and ice removal, you can make your home less inviting to criminals and protect your property this winter.

Watercolours residents have expressed a serious safety concern regarding the routine shortcut that teens have been making across the train tracks which poses a serious safety risk to them. The area in question is at the southwest end of the community. Recently LPWRA Executive Committee members met with officials from the City and the CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) committee. The purpose of this meeting was to follow up on the CPTED's recommendations as they too are concerned that with the speed of the trains on 3 tracks someone is going to get seriously injured or killed.
When the LPWRA approached the CPTED to draw attention to this issue, they concluded that the illegal crossing was a significant risk.
As a result, we are pleased to announce that despite CN & CP refusing to share costs the City has agreed to implement all of CPTED's recommendations. The City has committed to the following:

As a result of the reported sightings of coyotes and the unfortunate loss of pets in our community, the City of Mississauga will be posting warning signs at the pond.
Foxes and coyotes are a necessary and important part of our City's ecosystem. In the last few years a mange pandemic has drastically reduced coyote and fox populations throughout Ontario and as a result rodent and rabbit populations have increased dramatically.Recently, however, sightings of both foxes and coyotes have increased in Mississauga which indicates that they are making their natural comeback. As winter approaches natural prey such as mice and rabbits become scarce which means both coyotes and foxes must increase their hunting activity. Although, coyotes or foxes do not normally pose a risk to humans, coyotes will attack or prey upon unattended, unleashed or outdoor pets.
CAN COYOTES OR FOXES BE TRAPPED AND RELOCATED?

Every year they spearhead a number of events and activities designed to provide an open and welcoming environment for our neighbours.
